Small kitchen design ideas by Alon

The kitchen in undoubtedly the heart of the home, so making it feel that way is priority, no matter the size of the space. Some of you reading this may not be blessed with the largest of kitchens, but it doesn't have to be the end of the world - luckily there are ways to make use of small spaces, and turn them into something truly transformational.

This blog will be dedicated to help those who do not have large spacious kitchens by giving you some of our secret kitchen design tips and tricks; to make your kitchen feel more open and spacious.

1. Kitchen Colour Schemes

First and foremost deciding on a colour scheme can be difficult. Sure, you will probably check out many different shades to decide on one you think reflects your tastes and preferences. However, we can help you whittle out a few options.... Use white or neutral colours in a small kitchen! White and neutral colours are a life saver... they will be your friend in your small kitchen project.

Lighter colours reflect lighting, in turn enhancing your sense of space. A small kitchen will have less natural lighting, so using a dark colour scheme could make your room feel small and gloomy. Consider using lighter colours on your walls, countertops, cabinetry, and ceiling. Of course, you can mix these up with different shades and textures... it doesn't just have to be one colour!

2. Kitchen Lighting

As mentioned before smaller kitchen spaces tend to have less natural lighting which can make a room feel cramped and small. To solve this we tend to use as much lighting as possible. Doing so makes your kitchen feel bright and open; use mood lighting and/or use colour changing lighting.

Some kitchen spaces make it very difficult to really add flare; this is especially true for those homeowners who'd love their small space to allow for a feature island. It's not the end of the world if your kitchen space can't have this, make a lighting feature instead! By cleverly incorporating designer lighting, you can enhance your kitchen giving it that flare it so desperately misses.

We also find that using smart work lighting can really enhance your kitchens features and also help create a better ambiance for your work space. This can be achieved by adding plinth lighting and under cabinet lighting - p.s. under cabinet lighting can also enhance feature walls and splashbacks.

3. Cabinets & Storage Ideas

A great way to utilise space in a small kitchen is to use special size cabinets and possibly extra tall cabinets if your ceiling height allows this. You can store less frequently used items in higher cabinets which will increase worktop space, in turn making your kitchen feel open and less cluttered.

Some small kitchens are unfortunately plagued with a space that is far from functional... yes we're now going to talk about them hard to reach corner cupboards! In our industry we like to refer to these as 'blind corners' and yes, they're super frustrating. We like to think our 450 corner pull-out cupboards overcome this obstacle; offering an excellent storage solution. These type of corner cupboards mean no faffing around in attempt to find the salt you've pushed right to the back of the cupboard. Instead, everything is in full view for you, and can be easily reached.

4. Appliances

Innovation has made appliances smart, and smart appliances are kitchen space savers! Choosing the right gadgets for your kitchen could really save you from an over cluttered kitchen and allow more worktop space.

The Quooker Tap

Here at Alon we use Quooker Fusion- a boiling water tap, giving you instant access to 100 degree boiling water in a second. So throw that kettle away you have on the side of your kitchen taking up unnecessary worktop space, and get a boiling water tap. It acts like a normal kitchen tap producing cold and hot water, but with two presses down and a twist out comes the boiling water. We previously blogged about all the benefits of a Quooker tap including it's safety features... take a read.
